Buddha Statue

Buddha Dordenma statue is a greate Shakyamuni Buddha statue in Thimphu. It was built on celebrating the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. This gigantic statue of Shakyamuni has height of 51.5 m, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and is gilded with gold. There are 125,000 smaller Buddha statues placed inside of the Buddha Dordenma statue and 100,000 statues of which are 8-inches-tall and 25,000 statues of which are 12 inches tall. The throne that the Buddha Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall. The Buddha point attracts lots of tourist and it also give stunning view of Thimphu city.

It is located on the hill top in kuensel phodrang Nature Park overlooking the Thimphu valley, the capital city of Bhutan. It is approximately 10 minutes drive from Thimphu city.

History.

This statue has been prophesied by Guru Padmasambhava, which was written in Terma and revealed by Terton Dorji Lingpa after 672 years. Later in the twentieth century, renowned Terdak Lingpa from Singye Dzong East Bhutan sent a message to Yogi Sonam Zangpo, which unfortunately failed to deliver on time. Subsequently after 12 years, the message was received by His Holiness Trulku Jigme Choedrak Rinpoche, the 70th Je Khenpo of Bhutan. It was exactly 1999 years from the day have written. The prophecy says, “a statue of Shakyamuni would be built in the region between Wong and Paro, bestow blessings of peace and harmony in the world”. His Holiness then instructed Tsering Wangdi to build the statue. At the exact location where Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel retreated over 400 years ago, as per the prophecy.

Tsering Wangdi solemnly promised to initiate the Buddha Dordenma project on 145 acres of land with zero budgets. He jointly with Oversea followers and friends, especially main supporter Peter Teo Singaporean, started the project in the year 2006 with the approval from His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuk fourth king of Bhutan.
